The free Matt+ Kim concert on Thursday night at Pier 54 did three things for me. It showed me that Matt + Kim is more one-dimensional than I figured, which is too bad, because I was a fan for a while. It showed me that Flosstradamus isn’t a bad dance party also. I like to think they’re the poor man’s version of Girl Talk, but even that might be a stretch. I still had a good time though. Finally, I also learned about yet another great free show coming up—Ted Leo and the Pharmacists on July 23rd at the same venue.

Stay up-to-date on your favorite artists by following them on Twitter
All fans can get closer to their favorite bands just by following their tweets, whether those tweets are about recording sessions, post-concert thoughts or how big their feet are. Musicians in general are a lot of fun to follow, but these are the select few that really stand out.
1) John Mayer, a.k.a. “johncmayer”
Mayer loves to tweet, and he does so by making quirky analyses and comments to other celebrities — including the United States. Spotted July 4th on Mayer’s Twitter: “America, since it’s your birthday, you just lie on the couch. I’ll make you flapjacks. Today is your day. I am so happy to be your girl!” What an enigma.
2) Matt + Kim, a.k.a. “mattandkim”
Matt + Kim’s twitpics, while random, are also adorable. The duo reflects on nachos, Disney World and recycled toilet paper, as well.

A study was released this month on obesity in America, titled F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing In America. According to the study, the Adult Obesity Rate in New York is 24.5 percent. That is just the beginning and I will spare you with other details of the study, because the basic idea is that Americans eat too much. Since I know many of you pigged out or drank too much booze over July 4 weekend, I have some workout music recommendations.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are playing a free show at the South Street Seaport this Friday
If you’re in the city this weekend, you’re in for a cheap musical treat. So cheap, it’s free.
New Yorkers! Matt + Kim and Pains of Being Pure at Heart are both performing free concerts this weekend, BACK-TO-BACK. On Thursday at 7 p.m., Matt + Kim will play with Flosstradamus at Hudson River Park at Pier 54, while Pains of Being Pure at Heart will play the South Street Seaport Friday at 6 p.m. with Zaza and Ribbons.
I’m going to both, so I recommend the back-to-back bonanza. Few free concerts are this good. If you’re going, get there early.

My grandmother hasn’t acknowledged the existence of an album since Frank Sinatra’s Nice ‘n’ Easy. Thus, the idea of her listening to the latest from Beirut, Common or Yo La Tengo isn’t just comical — it’s downright ridiculous. It’s also the concept behind Breakfast at Sulimay’s, a video blog/online television series that you (and your grandma) are gonna want to check out, if you haven’t already.
From the corner of what appears to be a B-grade suburban diner, three lovable senior citizens don headphones, jam to the latest from the likes of Andrew Bird, Matt & Kim and Bat for Lashes, and deliver their ruling on the tracks.
My grandmother would surely grimace and pronounce that Dan Deacon’s “Snookered” was in headache-inducing poor taste.
Joe, Ann and Bill are totally down, though — they love Dan Deacon! They love Eminem! And of the latest from Grizzly Bear, they say:
“Is this… English?”
Priceless! Youth is wasted on the young.

First off, last night’s concert wasn’t planned, but it was an adventure.
Like I said yesterday I was assigned to cover the Mr. Hudson cocktail party (that’s another story), but while drinking strong beer and waiting for Mr. Hudson to arrive, I made friends with the online marketing team for Kanye’s label.
A little later, this guy named Diego mentioned he was going to a concert, and that Matt + Kim was going to play a secret concert. I lit up and said I loved them. He then asked me if I wanted to tag along, and I said “Hell yeah!” He gave me a ticket, and we caught a cab after meeting Mr. Hudson and taking his picture.
I’ll write up a concert review later today, but to spoil the suspense—it was pretty sloppy.

This is the beginning of the short 15-minute set. It was supposed to be a secret concert at the Bacardi Live concert.

I’ll explain tomorrow. It’s a good story. Too tired.

Dirty Projectors
Upbeat, feel-good summer music is in, and moody power chords are out of style like baggy pants. It’s time to feel great and dance with smiles. That’s why it’s time to countdown the pop tunes everyone’s going to be dancing to this summer.
This list includes a dab of mainstream pop with a mix of fun upbeat indie-pop.
1) “Little Secrets” by Passion Pit
-Passion Pit going to explode after their big back-to-back concert sets at the Bowery on the 19th and 20th. “Moth Wings” gets more attention on their MySpace, but “Little Secrets” has unmatchable energy. This song kicks ass.
2) “Stillness is the Move” by Dirty Projectors
-These guys are getting a ton of buzz with their new album Bitte Orca, and it’s well deserved. They’re hard-working musicians with a really quaint sound that still jams hard. Indie hipsters will frolick to these guys for a while.
3) “Orange Shirt” by Discovery
-I swear this is my last endorsement of Wes’ Discovery, but I really like their sound. It’s experimental and new-wave like Passion Pit but still harnaces Ra Ra Riot’s warm feeling.
4) “Paparazzi” by Lady GaGa
-I know I previously bashed GaGa’s latest single, but after listening to it a few more times, it’s got me hooked. I’m such a pop junkie. Lady GaGa’s music is so over-played, but she’s a hit-maker. I can’t argue with it. [Sorry, Caitlin]. I still stand by my remark that her other songs are better, though. I think I’ve watched too many music videos here at MTV.
5) “Daylight” Matt + Kim
-That damn Bacardi commercial has got me hooked to Matt + Kim’s quirky and addictive smash hit. If I were drunk, I’d just play this song all night and host a dance party. Sound good to you all?
