Portishead – Third

Portishead hasn’t released anything in ten years, and now they gift us with Third. It is a lot darker than their previous albums and, continuing what seems to be a frequent trend this year, feels more hollow and almost like a live recording.  Mix that in with some dark lyrics and a pseudo-creepy atmosphere (it’s the drums…) and you have Third.

It begins, in spoken words, with “Silence.” Immediately, it picks up, or down maybe, in the first half of the album. For about five songs, it entrances and lulls you in. Then, all of a sudden, a little acoustic “Deep Water” sneaks in before returning back to the previously darker style.  The horn blasts ending the album in “Threads” are brilliant.

Third is a pleasant surprise; I don’t think anyone honestly expected such a stellar album from Portishead. It’s definitely an improvement form their s/t and Dummy. Third is, without a doubt, an album worth giving at least one listen to soon; I’ve had it on repeat on my iPod for the past couple weeks now and it hasn’t gotten old.

Best Track: “Machine Gun”
