Black Milk – Tronic

Black Milk has grown into his sound and can now take the crown for super producer. His style is reminiscent of J Dilla (who is also a Detroit native). His translucent and textured beats are a breath of fresh air in the underground community.  He uses his skill to not just cut samples but to also play piano, synthesizers, drums and bass, becoming a driving force in music production.

On his most recent release, Tronic, Black Milk takes control of his sound with the help of underground superstars Dwele, Pharoahe Monch and DJ Premier who are more than willing to sit in on a track with this rising star. The prize track “Losing Out” sounds like a club groove junkie’s favorite track sped up to perfection. This song only adds to his unique “Dilla-esque” hip-hop sound.  Every instrument on this track is tight, proving that Black Milk is staying with us for a very long time.

Best Track: “Losing Out (feat. Royce Da 5’9′)”

DJ Babu – Duck Season, Vol. 3

DJ Babu is not new to the hip-hop scene and on his latest album he proves that he has a style that is still untouched. He gets together with familiar friends like Dilated Peoples and Little Brother. He combines his hard-hitting beats with smooth horn sections that slice and dice any track. His “turntablism” is also on display on this album and he cuts harder on this than ever before.

Duck Season, Vol. 3 gets back to what hip-hop is –  tight beats and rappers remembering the genre as an art form. On “The Unexpected” Babu hooks up with MF Doom and Sean Price who flow through the synth-driven heavy beat song.  Babu proves he is still one of the greatest scratchers and cuts every track with his familiar sketches.

Overall, this album takes hip-hop back to its modest years and although most tracks are gems they can get a bit repetitious. Other than that Babu is not giving any hand-outs and taking no hostages… it’s duck season.

Best Track: “Sbx2Lax2Ox feat. Percee P & Wildchild”
