In an age of pessimism and corporatism, its nice to see a company that’s purpose is to create musical harmony with the world. Clif Green Notes (yes they’re linked to those tasty energy bars) provides info and resources to bands that want to tour “green,” but don’t necessarily have the ‘do’-‘re’-‘me’ to do it alone.

Artists like Martin Sexton, Brett Dennen and Rogue Wave have worked with Green Notes to put on soul-shaking concerts without shaking up the environment around their stage. Recycling bins, composting stations and organic band tees at the concerts are all signs of the company’s influence.

What I love is how they raise environmental awareness. Picture traveling to a Mass. beach with some buddies: You park your Prias next to bio-diesel tour buses. Hundreds of people walk barefoot in the surf, scooping soggy chip wrappers and rusty beer cans up into garbage bags. Your bag gets heavy so you walk over to the stage where Missy Higgins belts out the words to “Peachy.” This is just one of the volunteer concerts Green Notes hosts where fans pick up trash, plant trees or build nature trails while listening to live music.

In Syracuse there’s a little too much snow to dig through to get to any trash, but you can still help the bands going green. A compilation album Protect the Places We Play, has songs from some of the participants… and can be purchased on iTunes for only eight bucks.
