Releases of the Week: GZA & Doom by zegoldst

GZA, one of the oldest and wisest members of the Wu-Tang Clan, released his seventh solo album last year. I kept this album out of my catalog not knowing that GZA still has it. GZA hooks up with familiar faces such as RZA and Masta Killa and it all meshes to perfection on this incredibly solid album. GZA produces and raps on the album, proving he’s truly a genius. The album slams with grainy drums, layered guitars and Wu-Tang-like rap. GZA speaks about the horrible conditions where he lived and what other kids growing up in the ghetto are experiencing.

The best track on the album, “Pencil” features RZA and Masta Killa who assist GZA in helping this track stay tight. The beat is composed of a distorted voice singing, a liquid-sounding drum kit and keyboards giving the track life. GZA is still one of the best rappers alive and it’s apparent on this track. His flow destroys and his smooth style accompanies the beat beautifully.

The album is incredible. If you thought the Wu was dead, think again. GZA proves that he’s here to stay no matter how old he gets. Although this album is no classic it is something that any Wu-Tang Clan fan would appreciate.

Born Like This – Doom

Doom (formerly MF Doom) comes out with his newest release that is more of the same. He’s up to his same tricks, rapping about strange things and producing beats that rival the best. Doom did, however, get back with Tony Starks (Ghostface Killah) on “Angelz”. Doom takes J Dilla’s beat on “Lightworks” and makes it his own. Doom is hip-hop all on his own and his styles are strictly underground. If you can’t stand strange beats and a man stranger than his raps, this album isn’t for you.

Angelz” is the most interesting track on the album. Ghostface shines on this track and Doom does his best to keep up with the longtime Wu member. The track drifts along with soulful background horns and strings with a hard snare drum beating in the background. The track is classic Wu and it sounds as if Doom is a bit out of place. He is brought back into the track by the way he and Ghostface contrast in styles.

Overall, this album is exactly what you would expect from the underground legend. It’s no masterpiece, but the different flavors it uses outnumber those at Baskin-Robbins.
