Editor’s Pick #117: YYYs on SNL by tjwell01

I’m only posting this because it’s unusual the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played on SNL with their new hit, “Zero,” while adding on an oldie, “Maps.” “Maps” is my favorite YYYs song ever–it’s all in that awesome drum beat. I think it’s cool the YYYs don’t ignore their greatest hits, even on an SNL gig.

Seeing this video reminded me of their unforgettable show back in Boston years ago. It was a free, open-to-the-public set outside near City Hall. Boston holds these free concerts frequently. I’ve seen Cake perform their once before too. However, it’ll go down as the one of the most alive performances I’ve witnessed, all thanks to lead singer Karen O and her stage presence.

She strutted on stage with a full body leather suit, except it was shredded, showing different colored tights underneath. Her bodily expression made the show by having her hips swerve and shake in reaction to the music. My favorite part was when she wrapped herself in her mic cord like it was a snake constricting her. It was almost like she was masturbating to her own music. Obviously, the SNL gig wasn’t as intimate as my experience—that’s TV for you.
