If location is one of the prime contributors to a musician’s sound, then Zen the Band is without the doubt the best reflection of the highly overlooked and much under-appreciated Miami indie music scene. Yes, all you skeptics out there, what we now refer to as indie music extends its reach to places other then Brooklyn and Montreal. Miami, much like Central New York, being one of the many left unrecognized.
Zen the Band, which consists of two sets of siblings and their base player, got their official start in 2005 playing some of the best local venues. Becoming regulars at Churchill’s Pub in downtown Miami, this five has an indie folk sound with just a pinch of tropical, beachy twang. Radiating sunshine in every note, tracks like “Fairytale” and “Shades Of Grey” are a must if you plan on surviving Cuse cold.
So next time your parents tell you its time to visit Grammy at her condo in Palm Beach, just say yes and start thinking of ways to sneak out after hours while Nana is sleeping. And whatever you do, don’t miss out on a live show from these guys.
