TOP TRACK: “Seven Nation Army”
Regardless of what Jack or Meg may tell you, The White Stripes’ Elephant is not simply another rock record. Strange, artistic and harsh, it takes the conventions of rock ‘n’ roll and turns them on their ear. There’s confidence and intrigue in Jack White’s distinctive voice and in Meg’s hauntingly beautiful lead vocals on songs like “In the Cold, Cold Night.” At the same time, there’s a certain dirtiness resonating from “There’s No Home for You Here” and the hit single “Seven Nation Army.” Far from straight rock ‘n’ roll, Elephant reinvigorated and reinvented the genre. This is garage rock of the most timeless kind.
