Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca is #17 on 20 Watts' Best of the Decade List

Part of 20 Watts’ Best of the Decade Coverage!

TOP TRACK: “Stillness Is the Move”

Let’s be honest: Dirty Projectors are what one might call an acquired taste. Between frontman David Longstreth’s reedy falsetto and his jagged, asynchronous songwriting style – check “Temecula Sunrise” to see what I mean – Bitte Orca can be a challenging listen.

But then again, most masterpieces are. And there’s no doubt that Bitte Orca is such a breakthrough: the spindly guitar lines, the three-part harmonic cawing, the blatantly appropriated R&B slither – all testify to something greater than your run-of-the-mill, Brooklyn-born indie rock. Beautiful and eerie, remote and intimate, Longstreth’s vision perplexes just as much as it compels.
