Bloc Party's Silent Alarm is #20 on 20 Watts' Best of the Decade List

Part of 20 Watts’ Best of the Decade Coverage!

RELEASED: 2005
TOP TRACK: “This Modern Love”

Bloc Party hit a high note with their 2005 debut Silent Alarm. Paying homage to both new wave and art-punk, Silent Alarm ventured into the realm of modern post-punk and succeeded at reinventing the style for mass consumption. Tracks like “Positive Tension” and “This Modern Love” smoothly merge electronic patches with traditional drum kits, while Kele Okereke’s introverted lyrics drip enthusiasm. Brian Eno and David Byrne undoubtedly smile from the sidelines as “Banquet” and “Price of Gasoline” radiate new wave energy. Complex yet accessible, the entire track list is a post-punk revivalist’s wet dream. With Silent Alarm, Bloc Party tore down an entire genre and began rebuilt it from scratch.
