Editor’s Pick#286: Breaking down Block Party’s “Surprise Act” by tjwell01

No, Passion Pit is not going to be the big "surprise" act for Block Party this year.

The Drake announcement for Block Party was expected, but what wasn’t expected was the hush-hush mystery of a “surprise middle act.” The act will be named later, but there’s enough information available to break down the mystery. The Newshouse’s Otto-Tune blogger, Nathan Mattise, does a solid job of analyzing the possible candidates that might be the surprise act. It’s more than speculation, because Mattise refers to the student survey posted online, highlighting UU’s thought process to fill out the lineup.

Drake was on the list for UU’s headlining act, along with Common, Kid Cudi, Ludacris, MGMT, Modest Mouse, Mos Def, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend and Weezer. We know how this played out.

However, the list for the possible supporting acts goes as follows: 3OH!3, Cobra Starship, Passion Pit, Keri Hilson, LMFAO, Lykke Li, Miike Snow, Pitbull and The-Dream. Now, it’s easy to eliminate candidates by process of elimination based on their tours already scheduled, and who is available for April 30th. It also makes sense for the band to be near by Syracuse, NY at a nearby date.

Let’s break it down:

Passion Pit: Sorry guys, it’s not Passion Pit because they’re booked for April 30th in Knoxville, TN.

Cobra Starship: Possibly, because they’re traveling from Milwaukee, WI to Providence, RI between April 28th and May 1st.

Keri Hilson: She’s hasn’t announced a tour, and isn’t scheduled for anything anytime soon. Not likely to be her.

LMFAO: They haven’t got anything scheduled past April 11th. Not a strong candidate.

Lykke Li: She doesn’t have any gigs planned either, and she seems way too indie for SU’s Block Party, which likes to book really mainstream acts like Sean Kingston and Ciara. This Swede ain’t coming to SU.

Miike Snow: He is on tour, but he’s not going to be very near Syracuse, NY around April 30th. He stops off at Coachella on April 18th and hits up Bonnaroo on June 10th. It’s not impossible, but it’s a stretch.

3OH!3: Their story is the same with Cobra Starship since they’re on tour together. One of these groups could be the mystery act.

Pitbull: Pitbull’s scheduled tour only goes as far as March 31st, so it’s hard to tell how much of a chance he comes to SU.

The-Dream: He also doesn’t have any planned tour dates.

So, based off this process of elimination, the following acts could be the mystery act: 3OH!3, Cobra Starship and Miike Snow. Now, UU could go way off the radar and pick up someone they didn’t even ask the students about, so this analysis isn’t fact, but it paints a picture of how it could all play out. It’s unlikely for the mystery act to be one of the acts off of the headliner list, because it would cost too much.

what about modest mouse? that was an option. or vampire weekend? all these others choices SUCH just like the rest of block party

Modest Mouse and Vampire Weekend were on the “Headliner List” and Drake was selected for that already. I don’t think UU could afford to buy two headliners fro Block Party.

No

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cobra Starship or 3OH!3. That’s kind of a continuation of the “are we in high school or college?” theme that UU started with The Academy Is last semester.

Definitely sucks for y’all though.

[…] concert series announcing its first event this semester—Miike Snow. As some of you know, UU was targeting Miike Snow with the survey they put out at the beginning of the year. It’s not a bad selection, to be honest, but this news makes you think more about that mystery […]

Fair enough…although I was beginning to think the Ok Go show in Ithaca was a little suspicious.

I just actually enjoy what we should submit right here. Rather new not to mention wise. A single concern though. I’m running Firefox with the help of Debian not to mention components with the existing structure products would be a bit wonky. I just know it’s not really usual developed. But it’s an issue towards hold in the mind. I just wish that going barefoot will probably guidance not to mention keep the finest good penning.
