The Grog Shop

VISIT: THE GROG SHOP ONLINE

The Grog Shop is a legendary Ohio venue that’s served Cleveland Heights for over a decade. One month ago 20 Watts decided to commission a short documentary on it.

Venues like the Grog Shop always have great history attached to them — a history of intrinsic connection with the music we hear in them. Think back to the best concerts you’ve been to and think about why they were great. Sure the band was awesome, but apart from the live performance and its smoke and mirrors, what will make the experience memorable? Venues owe a debt to the musicians who play in them just as bloggers and journalists do. Their job is to enhance the experience of the fans beyond what the band can pull off.

20 Watts staffers have had countless breathtaking experiences at Funk N Waffles, the Westcott Theater, Lost Horizon and other Syracuse venues. Animal Collective named their mainstream breakout record after Merriweather Post Pavilion. And of course, who doesn’t recall New York’s famed CBGB with some measure of fond nostalgia?

So when trusted 20 Watts associate Aaron Freeder offered to shoot a short profile on the Grog Shop, what could we do but jump at the opportunity? Check it out!

OR on VIMEO!

20 Watts Video: 20 WATTS vs. JERK Kickball by Irina Dvalidze

If you ever wondered what two of the coolest mags on campus do when they are not producing issues and web content, we bring you just a glimpse of the shenanigans. You might be surprised at what you’ll see from a bunch of nighthawks used to the Newhouse labs. There is nothing more fascinating than a group of AP Style junkies stuck on the quad on a rainy Syracuse afternoon kicking a red ball around.

There was sweat, tears and most definitely blood.

In case you were wondering- Score: 20 Watts (8)  |  Jerk (4)

Love and stereo,

— 20 Watts

PREVIEW: Nick Cicero’s MySpace

Nick Cicero is a musical phenom on campus, and no one knows it. He’s a hustler in the competitive world of hip-hop, and he loves every minute of it. He’s a shape-shifter too; he makes beats, sells them, and collaborates with big-time and small artists. Call him driven, call him determined–whatever it is, it speaks to him. Currently, he’s a grad student studying at Newhouse in advertising. He’s been actively working with Myles P and Delirium, who are also young risers themselves.

20 Watts Video: Sleigh Bells @ Spark Art Place (INTERVIEW!) by tjwell01

PREVIEW: Sleigh Bells’ MySpace

[EDITOR’S NOTE ON THE INTERVIEW: Derek Miller of Sleigh Bells did work on M.I.A.’s upcoming album–its not the other way around. PLEASE IGNORE THAT PART OF THE INTERVIEW!!]

It’s been less than a year since Sleigh Bells broke out at last summer’s CMJ Festival, and the hype keeps getting bigger. Spark Art Place in Syracuse, NY doesn’t get much more smaller or more obscure for such a big indie band, but it didn’t matter. The bodies in the crowd exploded as Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller pumped their shoes into ground, rattling the small art gallery till the dry paint on the walls began to crumble on Thursday. It took no longer than the second song for the guys in the crowd to start flying in the air and throwing elbows. It was sweaty, dirty and raw–just how the band likes it. Sleigh Bells live is a high-powered, emotional, full bodied experience Syracuse won’t soon forget.

Props to Mouth’s Cradle for setting the tone, as the band celebrated their first show since releasing their debut LP, The Next Big Thing. Kevin Hegedus and Brandon Linn rocked the red suit jackets and flourished under the spotlight with fun DJ jams and witty rhymes.

20 Watts Video: Neon Indian @ Big Orbit Soundlab by tjwell01

PREVIEW: Neon Indian’s MySpace

Our everlasting thirst for great concerts never yields, even if it requires a two-and-a-half hour trek to Buffalo, NY.  No one left the secluded dive bar, Big Orbit Soundlab, with any regrets. Neon Indian was tight, electric and rocked with a new found swagger. Things are looking bright for Alan Palomo’s crew after they locked up a set at Bonnaroo and played for the Jimmy Fallon Show.

The set was short and sweet, but only because the band is only loaded with one small, crazy-good LP, Psychic Chasms. Give this band more time to thicken the arsenal of songs, and Neon Indian can be a hell-raiser live act. For an encore, Palomo had to dig deep and pull out a VEGA jam–yeah, I think it’s time to get on that next album.

20 Watts Video: The Northbound Traveling Minstrel Jug Band by tjwell01

PREVIEW: VISIT The Northbound Traveling Minstrel Jug Band’s MySpace

These guys are SU’s party-band warriors, and if you haven’t seen their live set in an attic somewhere, you’ve been going to the wrong parties. Made out of smooth bluegrass soul, these guys are unmatched in these parts. They play so many campus shows, they’re getting worried they’re playing too much, but the crowd keeps roaring for more.
