Syracuse could have a free concert next fall

For those who may be dissatisfied with concert selections during your time at Syracuse, perhaps this is a way to actively change that feeling.

Victoria’s Secret PINK is running an online voting competition throughout 59 different college campuses in the U.S. The winner gets a free Back to School Bash put on by the company. The event would include a concert, free PINK merch, celebrities and Victoria’s Secret models (so not a bad deal). While the musical artist for the event– which would take place next fall– has not yet been chosen, past performers have included Girl Talk, Cobra Starship and Fergie.

If you’re interested, and want to vote to help impact who wins, check out the contest at the PINK Nation website. You can vote once per day, but the first round ends THIS FRIDAY. If SU gets past the first round, it’ll continue to compete against other schools in a bracket-style format. The winner will be announced April 20.

Editor’s Pick#286: Breaking down Block Party’s “Surprise Act” by tjwell01

No, Passion Pit is not going to be the big "surprise" act for Block Party this year.

The Drake announcement for Block Party was expected, but what wasn’t expected was the hush-hush mystery of a “surprise middle act.” The act will be named later, but there’s enough information available to break down the mystery. The Newshouse’s Otto-Tune blogger, Nathan Mattise, does a solid job of analyzing the possible candidates that might be the surprise act. It’s more than speculation, because Mattise refers to the student survey posted online, highlighting UU’s thought process to fill out the lineup.

Drake was on the list for UU’s headlining act, along with Common, Kid Cudi, Ludacris, MGMT, Modest Mouse, Mos Def, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend and Weezer. We know how this played out.

However, the list for the possible supporting acts goes as follows: 3OH!3, Cobra Starship, Passion Pit, Keri Hilson, LMFAO, Lykke Li, Miike Snow, Pitbull and The-Dream. Now, it’s easy to eliminate candidates by process of elimination based on their tours already scheduled, and who is available for April 30th. It also makes sense for the band to be near by Syracuse, NY at a nearby date.

Let’s break it down:

Spring CNY Concert Season by tjwell01

Neon Indian is just one of many great upcoming concerts scheduled for CNY

The highlights are everywhere, whether it’s Neon Indian and Passion Pit in Buffalo, or Sleigh Bells in Syracuse or The Flaming Lips in Ithaca.

LMFAO did an interview half naked last Thusday (8/6) in Times Square

LMFAO did an interview half naked last Thursday (8/6) in Times Square

PREVIEW: Download LMFAO’s Rock Party (Full album) MP3

LMFAO, a vulgar and obnoxious DJ duo nicknamed Redfoo and Sky Blu aren’t class-acts, but they spin the sickest club jams you’ve ever heard.

Although their rap lyrics mix guy-humor and self-aware goofiness, they make up for it with creative electronic sound-mixing and collaborating with big artists, like Lil Jon. I like to think of them as a hip-hop heavy version of Cobra Starship. It’s quite literally the hottest hip-hop/house music I’ve heard this summer. It’ll only be five seconds until you jump out of your chair and start air-humping.

They performed on MTV’s It’s On with Alexa Chung Thursday, and did an interview with MTV News in Times Square that afternoon. Luckily 20Watts was on the scene to take snapshots, and things got awkward immediately (see above). LMFAO decided they wanted to get a tan in New York City, so they stripped down to their boxers before the interview. Classic attention-whores, they pranced around yelling at tourists and danced with gawking girls. They knew damn well what they were doing and you can hear it in their music as well.
