Devendra Banhart's new video features a few good acts

While everyone has been going insane over the new Gaga video, the real artists have been putting out some work we can actually enjoy. The very awesome and much beloved Devendra Banhart has finally collaborated with MGMT‘s Andrew VanWyngarden and the Strokes‘Fabrizio Moretti to grace the public with a very trippy and very fun piece. Animated aliens, cigarette shaped spaceship, a butt-hole planet, a baby and a few visuals you have to see to believe, simply scratch the surface of the genius Banhart personifies.

Check out the video here

20 Watts Reviews Jack Rose’s Luck in The Valley by JohnCassillo

Jack Rose still provides great music for fans, even after his unfortunate passing

PREVIEW: VISIT Jack Rose’s MySpace
WE GIVE IT: 14/20 Watts

Luck in The Valley is a posthumous release by the recently deceased Jack Rose, frontman for early 90s psych-noise band Pelt, and Devendra Bahrnart collaborator.  In the past decade Rose released ten solo records deeply rooted in American folk, a reflection of his obsession with prewar American culture. For anyone even slightly interested in Americana or American folk, Luck in The Valley is a must listen. The album is like opening a time capsule, as it fully captures the essence of early America.

It’s chock-full of delightful collaborations with various other musicians like The Black Twig Pickers, Glenn Jones, Harmonica Dan and Hans Chew. Each player is loud and fast, keeping most every song at a constant square-dance tempo. Everything is acoustic and rustic, evoking great prewar imagery, especially the jangly, metallic clangs and plucks on Rose’s guitar. These common threads play out often on the collection of largely of original music, save three tunes: “West Coast Blues,” “Everybody Ought to Pray Sometime” (The 77s) and “Saint Louis Blues” (W.C. Handy). All of Rose’s interpretations are true to the style, but add so much color and personal expression. Continue reading

Editor’s Pick #254: Cool Shirts and Clear Consciences by Isabel Alcantara

The Yellow Bird Project

Was your New Year’s resolution to be more involved in charities and community service? Yeah, mine wasn’t either. But, on a quest to find new and awesome tees to wear for this new decade, I came across The Yellow Bird Project. The YBP is a non-profit operating from Montreal, with a three-fold mission: 1) to raise money for various charities through the sales of their totally kick-ass t-shirts, 2) to raise the public’s awareness of certain charities through the endorsement of indie rock artists, and 3) to raise the profile of artists they like. Now, before you yawn so wide that you pass out, keep in mind that these t-shirts (which you can buy to support whichever charity the tee happens to represent) are designed by the indie artists which they endorse. Cool, right?

The YBP was started in 2006 and its first contributing artists was the one and only Devendra Banhart. Now, four years later, the organization has grown and has the support of artists like, Metric, Grizzly Bear, Bloc Party, Ra Ra Riot, Of Montreal and Rilo Kiley, among others. Plus, if you (like me) are awaiting the arrival of your t-shirt designed by The National, which also happens to support Safe Space, you can play the local YBP game: Color Me Indie, for a chance to win an Indie Rock Coloring Book. What’s cooler than that? My new t-shirt. That’s what.
