LISTEN: “O.N.E” (Mouth’s Cradle Remix)
You’ve gotta hand it to Mouth’s Cradle for keeping their foot on the gas pedal after releasing their LP, The Next Big Thing. Brandon Linn is staying busy by entering into this remix contest for best remix of “O.N.E.” by Yeasayer. Linn brings an interesting Discovery approach to the song, while mixing in a jazz interlude. Linn loves the jazz interlude. He mixed it with a remix he did of The Smash Brothers’ “Maverick.” Take a second and support Mouth’s Cradle, and vote on their remix.

These days, greatness seems to come in pairs. Enter Mouth’s Cradle and the final product they’ve been sweating over for months, The Next Big Thing.
The album starts off with a song with a great story, “Ghosts.” Brandon Linn, Mouth’s Cradle’s DJ half, says he thought of the song the exact day before Michael Jackson died when he dreamed he saw a ghost in his room. You can’t make this stuff up. “Ghosts,” secretly Linn’s and Kevin Hegedus’ favorite track on the album, sets the tone with hard thumps and catchy ring tones. Linn’s a master of stringing odd noises and flipping them into head-banging beats, and “Ghosts” floats and rips catchy beats alongside Hegedus’s trademark high-pitch rhymes.
Very smoothly, Mouth’s Cradle takes it down a few notches with their famous “Princess of the Beatz,” which loops several vocal tracks all from Hegedus and a strumming acoustic guitar. The iconic sounds in this album don’t stop there though, as the single “Honey from a Stone” picks it up with fast-paced drum and piano keys.

20 Watts gets the first crack at Mouth’s Cradle’s much-anticipated The Next Big Thing, because we’re cool like that. The LP drops on iTunes tomorrow, and just like that Mouth’s Cradle sets the stage for a big leap from relative obscurity to becoming Syracuse University’s electronic/hip-hop titans. In addition to brand new tracks, the album features all the same hits from their debut EP Baby Teeth, which dropped last semester and got the buzz whirling. They also got some special help from experienced engineer and SU alum, Andrew Maury, who worked with Ra Ra Riot and The Static Jacks.
Kevin Hegedus (right) and Brandon Linn (left) accomplished something special with this album and it comes at a perfect time for the band on the eve of their coming out party this Thursday when they open for Sleigh Bells at Spark Art Place.
Stay tuned for an in-depth review of the LP tomorrow!

Part of our Issue 21 coverage!
Nashville-native Kesha (or Ke$ha, depending on your preference, and pronounced KESH-uh) knows how to work her image. This 22-year old pop star writes about waking up drunk in a rich dude’s front yard. She tweets about wanting it to rain so she doesn’t have to shower. She breaks into pop star’s homes (like Prince’s) to give them her demo CD. She’s wild, or least, really wants people to think she is.
Regardless of her reputation, Kesha’s pop music captures attention. Last January, her debut, Animal, knocked Susan Boyle’s LP from the top spot of Billboard’s list of best-selling albums and her single, “Tik Tok,” has been #1 on the Hot 100 chart for over a month. Her half-sung, half-spoken lyrics may be heavily tweaked by Auto-Tune, but her songs are so infectious that eventually you might be dancing too hard to Continue reading

LISTEN: “The Reward is More Money to Blow” by Hi-Tag
It’s been well-known now for months that SU’s campus is becoming a hot-spot for student DJs/mash-up artists with prominent local names such as Big Mouth, Brandon Linn (of Mouth’s Cradle) and Devon James, and now it looks like the list is expanding with the emergence of Hi-Tag, a.k.a. Drew Taggart. The Bandier program sophomore hasn’t publicized his music until now, and honestly, it’s pretty damn good. “The Reward is More Money to Blow” is a great build-up jam with smart and creative hip-hop samples featuring Lil Wayne and Drake, but I feel a little ripped off in the end. Look out for this kid once he hones his skills and becomes a valiant competitor to the veterans I mentioned above.
