20 Watts Video: Neon Indian @ Big Orbit Soundlab by tjwell01

PREVIEW: Neon Indian’s MySpace

Our everlasting thirst for great concerts never yields, even if it requires a two-and-a-half hour trek to Buffalo, NY.  No one left the secluded dive bar, Big Orbit Soundlab, with any regrets. Neon Indian was tight, electric and rocked with a new found swagger. Things are looking bright for Alan Palomo’s crew after they locked up a set at Bonnaroo and played for the Jimmy Fallon Show.

The set was short and sweet, but only because the band is only loaded with one small, crazy-good LP, Psychic Chasms. Give this band more time to thicken the arsenal of songs, and Neon Indian can be a hell-raiser live act. For an encore, Palomo had to dig deep and pull out a VEGA jam–yeah, I think it’s time to get on that next album.

City Sounds 3/8: Austin by krkuchta

Listen to WERW's Sounds of Austin, Texas

PREVIEW: VISIT WERW’s Blog

This Monday is City Sounds’ last show before Spring Break, and where are we going this vacation? Cancun? Key West? The Bahamas? No, no screw that, City Sounds is going to AUSTIN for South By Southwest (SXSW)! Seriously, where else would we go?

Music from Austin, TX has never been just one genre or just one scene. It’s been diverse ever since its start, so to speak. From the garage rock of 13th Floor Elevators, to the Lo-Fi strangeness of Daniel Johnston, to the indie rock of Spoon, Austin has had its variety of great musicians.

The variety only grows with the coming of SXSW every spring. A festival of film, music and all around cool shit, SXSW has put Austin back onto the map in a big way. Artists this year include Austin natives like Neon Indian, White Denim and Woven Bones.

Those bands will be playing the festival, but we can’t forget the Austin bands that aren’t, such as Explosions in the Sky, The Greencards and Belaire.

All parties will be covered. The past, present and future of the music of Austin will be explored by City Sounds Monday, March 8th from 11pm-1am on WERW.

Editor’s Pick #283: Neon Indian Hits up Jimmy Fallon by tjwell01

PREVIEW: Neon Indian’s MySpace

Norwegian boys, Kings of Convenience, were originally slated to play Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, but Neon Indian slipped in because of a last minute cancellation. Not that anyone was upset since Neon Indian rolled in like a champ and put on the moves for the mainstream spotlight. You could tell Alan Palomo brought his A-game with his Buffalo Bill dance moves on stage (thanks, Carly). Who knew Jimmy Fallon was such a hipster? Apparently he found out about Neon Indian through Shazaam on his iPhone.

With this stellar performance and their slated appearance at Bonnaroo recently announced, Neon Indian is blowing up faster than most expected. Even Questo of the Roots was impressed via Twitter. Can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for their Buffalo show at Big Orbit Soundlab Space on March 12.
