ISSUE 21 | Metro Hotspot: Austin by 20watts

Austin is 20 Watts's latest Metro Hotspot!

Part of Issue 21 coverage!

Austin, Texas, has become a world-famous city for its music. When you Google “Live Music Capital of the World” Austin appears in every link. Generally, when you think of Austin, you either think of music, or opinionated right-winger Gov. Rick Perry, but you mostly think of music.

Dozens of venues line Sixth Street, the city’s yellow-brick road for live music. It becomes much larger than life in the spring when South by Southwest Music and Arts Festival (SXSW) hits Austin. Artists regularly throw secret, un-promoted shows in venues throughout the city when they aren’t giving regularly-scheduled performances at the festival. Even City Hall throws Continue reading

City Sounds 3/8: Austin by krkuchta

Listen to WERW's Sounds of Austin, Texas

PREVIEW: VISIT WERW’s Blog

This Monday is City Sounds’ last show before Spring Break, and where are we going this vacation? Cancun? Key West? The Bahamas? No, no screw that, City Sounds is going to AUSTIN for South By Southwest (SXSW)! Seriously, where else would we go?

Music from Austin, TX has never been just one genre or just one scene. It’s been diverse ever since its start, so to speak. From the garage rock of 13th Floor Elevators, to the Lo-Fi strangeness of Daniel Johnston, to the indie rock of Spoon, Austin has had its variety of great musicians.

The variety only grows with the coming of SXSW every spring. A festival of film, music and all around cool shit, SXSW has put Austin back onto the map in a big way. Artists this year include Austin natives like Neon Indian, White Denim and Woven Bones.

Those bands will be playing the festival, but we can’t forget the Austin bands that aren’t, such as Explosions in the Sky, The Greencards and Belaire.

All parties will be covered. The past, present and future of the music of Austin will be explored by City Sounds Monday, March 8th from 11pm-1am on WERW.

20 Watts Reviews Hot Chip’s One Life Stand by crumblymuffin

Hot Chip's One Life Stand is a pleasant surprise for listeners

PREVIEW: VISIT Hot Chip’s MySpace
WE GIVE IT: 15/20 Watts

Hot Chip doesn’t seem to have much of a problem putting themselves out there.  Their first few albums, squiggly homages to dance, soul and synth-pop fell in quite nicely with the mid-decade boom of equally squiggly dance records out at the time, but as history beats on, they’ve been more and more at risk of becoming nothing more than a retread, a burst of nostalgia for a dead genre few are willing to touch. It comes as equal parts surprise and necessity then, that the band would release an album as incredibly diverse as One Life Stand at the dawn of the new decade.

Instead of letting their method fall by the wayside though, it seems that Hot Chip have instead focused their vision, refracting their synth-dance backgrounds into a broader spectrum of songcraft.  While tracks like opener “Thieves in the Night” and “One Life Stand” show a lot of the old tricks and trademarks of the band (maybe add in a few more mind-bending synthesizer sounds), other tracks stretch the band’s skills into new realms.  “Hand Me Down Your Love” calls to mind a mix of Spoon and classic 50’s soul, and “Alley Cats” unfolds into a captivating minimalism that begs for replay after replay.
