City Sounds 12/7: Providence by krkuchta

Deer Tick

This week City Sounds is taking a trip back to New England to visit…Providence?!?!

Yes, you may be wondering what the hell Providence has to offer us in terms of music.  But there’s an interesting blend of music that came from Providence, and the city still has it coming.  Noise rock and experimental music held its own in P-town, with bands like Lightning Bolt and Arab on Radar.  That legacy lives on with the grindcore sound of White Mice and the unclassifiable Chinese Stars. Members of the early noise bands went on to form other projects, but most stayed true to their Rhode Island roots.  Other artists from The Divine City are getting national praise.  With neo-folk on the rise, Deer Tick and The Low Anthem are reaching an audience outside Providence’s 18 and a half square miles.

Providence is becoming quite the art hot spot too.  Venues like Firehouse 13 and  AS220 house gallery space and stages for bands. Avant-garde performers The [VIENNAGRAM:] and street band What Cheer? Brigade make for interesting and very involved performances.  Providence is up and coming, and we’re going to delve into this small, firecracker of a city Monday from 11pm-1am on WERW.
